I retired from Belle Sherman in 2010, but just couldn't stay away. I come back to be a part of the learning adventure with fourth graders. I get to do two of my very favorite activities: literature groups, Mystery Class. I love to travel - this summer my husband and I drove to Alaska and back with our travel trailer. I was happy to get home to see my family and reconnect with the community here, after 4 months on the road .

My husband and I moved to Ithaca in 1963 from Minnesota with our 6-week-old baby. Our two daughters grew up here and went through Belle Sherman, DeWitt and Ithaca High, and are now teachers. My passion is nature and I love hiking and teaching kids about some of the interesting things to be found right nearby. I am so lucky to be able to come to the 4th grade classes! I've been closely associated with the Finger Lakes Land Trust since its beginning, in 1989. (Check out its website -- www.fllt.org -- for great guided walks at its nature preserves.) I also love music and am a violinist in the Cayuga Chamber Orchestra.

David Caughey
David Caughey is Professor Emeritus of Aerospace Engineering at Cornell University. He and his wife, Linda, have lived in the Belle Sherman area since 1974. Both of their daughters, Betsye and Amanda, attended Belle Sherman, and Betsye's daughters, Avalon and Lola, currently attend the school (in fifth and second grades, respectively).
Professor Caughey's research interests at Cornell centered on developing efficient computer-based analyses of fluid flows past vehicles, frequently used to design the wings of aircraft. Since retirement, he has enjoyed passing on his love of mathematics by volunteering to work with fourth-grade students in Ms. Ciotoli's class at Belle Sherman.
David also enjoys music; he plays the guitar and sings with his church choir and with the Dorothy Cotton Jubilee Singers.
